BALD CYPRESS 'taxodpum distichum' NATIVE. Known as the “Swamp cypress”, this conifer reaches 100’-150’ with diameters of 3’ to 6’ or more. This species is also called “Wood eternal” because the heartwood is resistant to decay. It is one of the rare conifers that is deciduous. The ‘leaves’ are a yellow-green and resembles a feathery pinnately (or bi-pinnately) compound leaf. This tree is found in deep, moist, sandy loams. The wood of this species is very durable and is used in the construction of docks, bridges, silos, tanks, caskets, general millwork, green house construction, seed flats, shingles, cooperage, poles, pilings, and crossties. The resin from the cones is used locally as an analgesic for lesions of the skin. The knees are fashioned wooden novelties for the tourist trade. This species has a limited ornamental use. It has a beautiful fern-like foliage. It has attractive orange-red fall color This tree is very versatile and grows and many different soils. Uses: planted as street trees, as a hedge or screen, shade tree. Wood used in building construction, fence posts, planking in boats, doors, blinds, flooring, shingles, caskets, interior trim, and cabinetry.
