MAYHAW NATIVE crateagus opeca AKA Mayhaw, Western Mayhaw, May Hawthorn, Riverflat Hawthorn, Applehaw a native plant of Florida that the ole timers use to make Mayhaw Jelly and Jam. It grows up to 70 ft. It likes low areas that have standing water most of the year, such as creek and river bottom.
Grows 30 feet tall with a tall trunk and narrow rounded crown. Can also be a large shrub. Has spiney branches. Clusters of showy pink or white flowers. Large reddish fruit that ripens from May to June.
Used: fruit is made in preserves and jellies. Ornamental or hedge in poorly drained wet, rich and acidic soils.
Zones 6-9.
