GRANCEY GREY BEARD/FRINGE TREE Native 10. Fringetree Chionanthus virginicus:
This small tree has an upright oval to rounded form and can reach 20 feet tall and 10-15 feet wide. They are slow growing. The flowers are pure white and slightly fragrant and hang on the tree for about 2 weeks. The leaves are opposite or subopposite and simple. Fall coloration is yellow. It has moderate drought tolerance and non salt tolerance. It is resistant to pests and disease. This tree is dioecious- meaning there are separate male and female trees.Uses: Fruits are highly prized by birds. Landscape tree. Can be used under powerlines- won’t need pruning.
Fun Facts: Is commonly one of the last plants to produce leaves each year. Several parts have been used medicinally- to treat gallbladder and liver illnesses. It is host to the Rustic Sphinx moth. Known as “Grancy greybeard” or “Old mans beard”.
