RIVER BIRCH Betula nigra It is one of the very best fast-growing shade trees, and it has colorful exfoliating bark which makes it beautiful n the winter. This tree grows at a medium to fast rate, and can grow up tp 13" to more than 24" per year. It is a heat tolerant tree. The roots of River Birch are far reaching but are non-invasive. Since the tree prefers to grow in moist, wet and clay soils therefore the roots do not penetrate deep in search of water since it is easily available in the upper layer of the soil. Plant approx. 20ft from your home. Host to Tier Swallowrail & Crescents Butterflies.
Uses: planted along stream banks and other areas that are wet for weeks. Tolerates low soil oxygen and flooding- needs moist conditions. Requires an acid soil. Used in strip mine reclamation. Wood used for furniture, flooring, and cabinetry. Bark is used to decorate and in crafts. Some species of birch- the wood is used for guitars, tambourines, and other musical instruments.
Fun Facts: Is a short lived tree- 30-40 years. The name Birch is derived from the old English word “bircen” which signifies “bright” or shiningin reference to it’s bark. In various cultures, birch trees are associated with renewal, purification, and protection. Symbolizing new beginnings and fresh starts.
