SHUMARD RED OAK TREE NATIVE 'Quercus shumardii also known as a swamp rwd oak or a spotted oak
This tree is also known as the “Spotted oak” or “Swamp oak” or “Shumard red oak”. This tree is a large tree (reaching 60’ to 125’ with diameters of 1 to 5’) with a straight axis and broad open rounded crown. The leaves are deciduous and turn a red or brown in the fall. The root system is extensive and moderately shallow. This tree is found in moist- well drained soils, dry ridges and limestone hills. The leaves turn a beautiful red and orange in the fall. It is one of the largest of the oak species. It is a great choice for wildlife. Not only is it one of the fastest growing oaks, but it’s also one of the last oaks to drop acorns. This provides wildlife food right when winter is approaching and they need food. Grows 14 to 24 inches per year.The acorns are bitter and when ground up- can be used as flour, roasted, & ground up to make coffee- or they can be eaten whole. The Native Americans used the bark for medicinal purposes and acorns as described above. This tree was named for the state geologist of Texas- Benjamin Franklin Shurmard (1820-1869). This species is a very important timber species used for flooring, furniture, interior trim, and cabinetry.
Uses: landscape trees. Used for flooring, paneling, interior trim, furniture, decorative molding, and cabinetry.
Fun Facts: Largest tree in the red oak family- the largest Red Oak species in the world. Acorns are both edible to people and wildlife. They live for hundreds of years. The oldest Shumard oak on record was 480 years old.
